No Sweat. How To Keep Your Feet Cool This Summer

Posted: Wednesday 23 July, 2008

Feet are by far the sweatiest part of the body with over 250,000 sweat glands and with temperatures this summer predicted to be hotter than average, keeping feet cool and odour-free could prove a real problem according to foot experts Fitness Footwear, the number one online sports and activity shoe retailer.

Luke Barlow Founder of Fitness Footwear offers ten top tips for keeping your feet fresh this summer:

  • Always wear socks made from cotton or wool rather than a man made material as cotton absorbs sweat much better than other materials.
  • Try not to wear the same shoes every day, by alternating them it gives shoes a chance to air out.
  • Pour baking soda into your shoes and leave it in overnight, this will absorb any moisture and nasty odours.
  • Always wear socks with closed shoes such as trainers.
  • Go barefoot when you can - try to do this when you're at home as much as possible to allow your feet to breathe.
  • Use deodorant! Antiperspirants can also be used on the feet by massaging them into the skin.
  • Avoid plastic or rubber shoes that don't allow your feet to breathe and avoid fur-lined shoes or boots. Breathable leather or canvas shoes are best.
  • If you are worried about hygiene, try sandals that have antimicrobial footbeds such as the Merrell Chameleon which will stop the growth of bacteria and keep feet fresh.
  • Try some hot and cold therapy to invigorate your feet, place them in cold water for one minute then switch to comfortably hot water for one minute. This will improve circulation and freshen the feet.
  • Replace your shoes every six months or if you can't afford it, buy some insoles and replace these regularly.

"Our feet have more sweat glands per inch of skin than any other body part so it's no wonder it can be a nightmare keeping feet fresh and dry in the summer. By avoiding manmade materials and wearing open shoes and sandals as much as possible you should be able to stop your feet getting hot and sweaty."
