A million reasons to read a book and one great reason to visit Northampton

At the beginning of December I blogged about World Book Night (WBN) and how I had applied to be one of the book givers responsible for handing out 1 million books, for free, on Saturday, March 5. I’m delighted to be able to tell you that I have been chosen (yay!) along with 19,999 others so I would like to share my plans for the special event.
I can give away my 48 copies of Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin in any way that I choose but instead of roaming the streets or knocking on doors I wanted to do something a little more worthwhile. I bought my copy of the novel at the Northampton General Hospital charity shop and it was ‘loved’ by the time I became its owner – now it’s falling apart! As one of the strap lines for WBN is ‘Do you love a book so much you want everyone to read it?’, I wanted to enter into the true spirit of the event and encourage others to pass on their love of a book so I’m organising a book swap where I will be randomly distributing my WBN copies.

The Fishmarket Gallery in Northampton has kindly agreed to host my event and the local paper, the Chronicle and Echo, and BBC Radio Northampton are looking forward to helping me promote the national campaign and my little local book swap. I’m looking for anybody to assist in getting the word out in and around Northampton, so if you’re local and have a passion for a book – fiction, non-fiction, a great recipe book or even one you remember from your childhood – please tell everyone you know and come along between 3pm and 6pm on Saturday, March 5.
Bring any book you that have enjoyed owning and reading, but are prepared to part with, and take away any title you fancy from, what will hopefully be, a big pile of love-filled donations. If you come along, you could be one of the people I choose to receive a specially printed WBN copy of The Blind Assassin.
