Apprenticeships to Be Reformed to Counter Youth Unemployment

Perspective, a leading provider of learning management software, has welcomed planned reforms to the apprenticeship system in the UK.
Although apprenticeship figures grew by almost half a million over the previous year, the majority of uptake was from adults aged 25 and over. As such, Business secretary Vince Cable has announced plans to enable more young people to benefit from apprenticeships to help further their job prospects and counter growing youth unemployment figures.
To help encourage more businesses to offer apprenticeships to younger workers, a number of incentives are to be introduced to encourage the employment of younger staff. For example, any business with less than 50 staff will be offered up to £1,500 per apprentice in a bid to create 20,000 new apprenticeships for 16 to 24-year-olds during 2012/13.
Paul Davis, managing director of Perspective, commented: “It is encouraging to see the government looking to promote apprenticeships to the younger generation. With youth unemployment having recently pushed passed the one million mark, it is pleasing to see the government being pro active in looking to assist the UK’s unemployed to find work. Although it is good to see the number of apprenticeships increasing, it is important that the weight is shared across all age groups, rather than the focus being mostly on older ages.”
Furthermore, Vince Cable made a pledge to ensure red tape associated with apprentice employment will be removed to not only incentivise employers, but also apprentices to encourage them to continue training and improve their chances of finding work. Cable commented: “We’ll cut no corners on quality. Apprenticeships will remain the gold standard for excellence in vocational training – but where red tape serves no purpose, we’ll strip it away.”
