Being Social

I read an article this week that stated social media was making people less social and I instantly felt the need to rebut this statement. It frustrates me when old-fashion sentiments cloud peoples' judgements - sometimes we need to take a step back and look at the wider picture. How can social media possibly be making people less social when the entire concept is based around networking and connecting with people?
It might be via a different platform, that is not face to face, but social network users are socialising none the less. I have to admit that I would get annoyed at the sight of friends checking their Facebook updates on their phones whilst sitting in the pub having a drink (which I stand firm on), but I can fully appreciate that there may be extenuating circumstances - they might be checking to see if they have had a reply from their best friend who is travelling, or their family-member who is living abroad.
I have to say that without my various social media profiles I would not be aware of several firework and bonfire parties that are taking place this weekend - thanks to the wonder that is Facebook Events - I am even having to double-book my time, a luxury I most certainly would not have been given had I not had presence on my friends profiles.
So for all those in doubt - social media is referred to as ‘social' for a reason.
