Decisions, decisions

Pete Goold
I'm desperately trying not to gloat about it but Emma and I are going away with our daughter for our first two week break since we started Punch back in 2003 (and actually our first in about 8 years) this Saturday - and frankly I'm having to make decisions that I'm just not used to these days.
Shall I take my 5ml long sleeved wetsuit or my 3 ml short sleeved (it may well be wishful thinking for me to fit into the latter now, bought in Australia about 10 years ago when i was considerably more sprightly)? Which of the 30 or so books that have piled up on my shelves at home in recent years shall I take? How can I fill the next 14, virtually entirely empty, days?
Having started Stephen Fry's 'Making History' recently - which is fairly lightweight and relatively easy to read yet still engaging - I'm not sure whether Andy Marr's 'History of Britain' or Melvyn Bragg's '12 Books that Changed The World' are going to make it into the bag frankly. In fact, the more i think about it, a lightweight summer read is the only option with a three year old in tow that's likely to demand attention at every turn.
I somehow suspect that there's no way i can be offline for one whole week - never mind two - but it's been such an incredible year to date in terms of growth of the business, client wins, new team members etc that it I most definitely owe it to my family - and probably myself to take time out. And of course I'm sure it will be great, once i manage to unwind.
So, with a dutiful nod to my own Dad who did the same for me, I'm hoping to be carrying on the Goold family tradition of getting the next generation into the water and surfing at about three years old. Literally can't wait...
