Learning my way through search and social

I’m only into my third week at Punch but already it feels like I’ve always been part of the team. I have been in PR for over four years and could probably cite most of the national business and consumer journalists in my sleep, but the last few weeks have been a steep learning curve for me. Punch has really pushed my comfort zone, getting me thinking about SEO and social media in ways I haven’t before.

Having come from a traditional PR background, it’s nice to be learning new ways of working and SEO and social do fall in line with PR more than I have realised before. This week alone I am thinking of new digital ways to help clients with their PR campaigns and really starting to think outside of the box.

I was also inducted into Google+ last week, something that I had got only as far as setting up my profile for but had never really mastered, until now. Well if Obama has a G+ page… then so should I! The main wow for me was being introduced to the world of Hangouts. If you haven’t tried Hangouts yet, give it a go. It allows you to make video calls between G+ users, very Skype-like but all on one social platform.

Google also announced this week that users will also be able to make free voice calls from Hangouts to any US or Canadian landline, even if one of the callers doesn’t have a Google account or computer. Eventually we should see this come across to the UK which will be a fantastic way of holding conference calls or using video conferencing.

I am looking forward to all of the new opportunities Punch can give me.
