Many Mums Prefer Practical Presents To Flowers, says Trades Supermarket

Posted: Wednesday 30 March, 2011

Sons and daughters up and down the country will be visiting their mum this weekend with a Mother’s day gift but according to shopping and DIY tips website, Trades Supermarket, flowers are out of fashion and practical presents are in.

Research undertaken on six major flower delivery companies by Which? Gardening revealed that most blooms in one £27 bouquet died within just seven days and another bouquet was delivered a day late. Gifts like flowers are nice but with the UK recession still ongoing, money can be spent more wisely on something that mum really needs, meaning she doesn’t need to buy the item herself.

Trades Supermarket is advising those planning to purchase a Mother’s Day gift to ask their mum what she needs rather than wasting money on a bouquet or chocolates that won’t last two minutes. Seeds and new gardening tools is one option for green fingered mums, paint or tiles would be ideal for mums planning a Spring refresh in their kitchens, whilst some new shelves might be just the present for others.

DIY and landscaping TV favourite, Tommy Walsh, also a member of the Trades Supermarket, said: “The recession has hit everybody pretty hard so families don’t have spare cash and mum’s don’t want to see them wasting it on a gift that doesn’t last, like a bunch of flowers. My advice to anyone looking for a present is to buy their mum something she actually needs. If it’s DIY or gardening related and they really want to show their mum they love her, offer to help do the work as well.”

Mother of two from Saddleworth, Lynne Stott, commented: “I asked my children to buy me a new kitchen tap between them instead of some flowers! If they are going to spend their well earned money on me I’d rather it was on something I need, it just seems less of a waste that way.”
