Over twenty years ago, political non-profit Rock the Vote began as an idea to empower generations of future voters to make their voices heard. Through the years, they have teamed up with celebrities and musicians via roadshows and pop culture channels, such as MTV to reach their target audience.
Now they are using social media to make it easier for the young voters to register. To do this, they have partnered with QR code reader app RedLaser and social media promotions firm PromoJam on a mobile-focused campaign helping users register to vote via smartphones. According to ReadWriteWeb, by scanning a QR code, the user is taken directly to an app where they can fill out the voter registration form straight from their mobile device. This will make it easier for potential voters to be registered and ready for Election Day in November. This initiative was formed to combat the re-occurring restrictions put in place by local legislations.

Users who register to vote by scanning the code are then also able to like, share, retweet or pin their activity through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest. This will enable them to highlight their activity on the social networks, encouraging their friends to do the same. Rock the Vote hopes to register 1.5 million voters between the ages of 18-29 for the 2012 Presidential Election.
