Three Social Media New Year’s Resolutions

As much as the world loves social networking, how often do we do those important housekeeping tasks? Me? Never! If I have time I might get on with some social tidying over the holidays but I’m making some New Year’s resolutions and I thought you might want to too.

January 1

Create and keep on top of Facebook friend lists – Similar to Twitter lists and G+ circles, I’ve been meaning to categorise all my friends so that I can easy view the news feed of certain groups of people whenever I want to. Seeing as the EdgeRank algorithm serves everybody’s feeds based on levels of interaction, there are lots of status updates, photos and comments that I never get to see. Hopefully with a little bit of organisation I can start engaging with friends I’ve forgotten I was connected to and for 2012 I’m going to ensure all new friends are  listed correctly.

Cross reference those friended, followed and circled – With three social profiles on the go, actually four including LinkedIn, it’s easy to get in a bit of a tiz about who you’re associated to and where, so I’m going to set myself a project to cross-reference my connections. As Google+ is the latest addition, I have been the least organised with it; actively searching for people and circling them appropriately is definitely the top job within this task for me as I predict the network will boom in 2012. Plus, as I connect with new people I’ll continue to do this and hopefully it won’t become a daunting chore ever again.

Clean up my Twitter follow list – When someone new follows you on Twitter, it can be all too easy to follow back without really understanding the type of content they will be tweeting and the frequency. Inevitably, you sometimes get sick and tired of seeing the same tweeter, you don’t find their posts interesting or they never bother to tweet. I’m going to go through the 620 people I follow and remove those who make up the ‘noise’ in my feed; through next year and beyond I’m going to resolve to do this every couple of months.

Overall my resolutions allude to the old adage ‘tidy house, tidy mind’ so here’s to not only a happy and prosperous New Year but an orderly one too!

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Punch.
