Very Pinteresting

Always one to arrive fashionably late but just on time, I decided to take a look at Pinterest over the past couple of weeks. What I’ve found is a very innovative and inspiring network which seems to be a great way of bookmarking all of the cool imagery around the internet that would otherwise be lost in my browser history, only to be rediscovered by chance.

One slight disappointment for me was that Pinterest doesn’t support the pinning of .gif images, which would have added another slight dimension to the network and another outlet for brand innovation (which is evident in some areas of Google+, like the scrapbook). In addition I think that from both a user and brand perspective, more integration with other social networks such as Facebook (limited) and Google+ (non-existent) would really improve its relevance to users and their respective audiences, not to mention adding extra visibility that could potentially contribute to Pinterest’s growth.

Another curious stat I saw is that apparently 97% of Pinterest’s “pinners” are female. I find this a little odd, but it will be interesting to see if and how Pinterest changes its features to pull in more male users should the stat be true. I love it, so I struggle to see how there can be such a female dominance.

Either way, it’s definitely one of the most innovative uses of imagery in the digital environment and I can see it continuing to grow well into 2012 and beyond.
